What changes the plan
Start with the controls you need immediately: starting, selecting drive and reverse, parking, mirrors, lights and opening the fuel door. Ask the operator to demonstrate them on the parked vehicle, then repeat the sequence while stationary if permitted. Do not let embarrassment replace understanding. Similar-looking switches can perform different functions across models.
Discuss the route constraints rather than asking only about performance. Explain hotel ramps, parking arrangements and any expected long stop. Confirm whether a lift system is fitted and what it can and cannot do. Record the operator’s roadside contact and the process for a warning message or unexpected issue. Do not attempt an unfamiliar repair or clear a warning on your own.
Finish with a shared condition record and the return plan: fuel requirement, return location, latest agreed time and how inspection will happen. Keep the written agreement accessible, but store identity and payment documents privately. The goal is a clear, repeatable handover, not a rushed signature followed by questions from the driver’s seat.
